The Department of Geography and Applied Geography, North Bengal University was established in the year 1962 along with the establishment of the University. The Department offers teaching in the post graduate level (both at NBU Campus & Jalpaiguri Campus) and also offer M.Phil. and Ph. D programme. The new syllabus has been framed to incorporate the different fields of Geography from Geomorphology to Urban issues, Pedology, Population dynamics and Regional Planning and Development. Digital Cartography and Geographical Information System has been incorporated in the syllabus to equip the students to further their research interest. A substantial number of the faculties are participating in several consultative research works. The Department is continuing its programme of recording weather information daily since 2002.This programme was done in order to provide the society need based service. The new syllabus under CBCS System was introduced since the 2018-19. Special attention has given to the different emerging and application oriented aspects in the new syllabus under the semester system including Geographical Information System, Remote Sensing and Disaster Management. The Department at present offers Post Graduate students special courses in Applied Pedology, Cartography, Fluvial Geomorphology, Population Geography, and Urban Geography.

The department is sponsored by UGC SAP-DRS II and has completed UGC SAP-DRS I successfully. At present, the Department is at the final year of the completion of Phase II. This department is enriched further with the Centre for Geo-Spatial Sciences which is attached to this Department of Geography and Applied Geography, North Bengal University. At present the department has 12 faculty members with expertise in the field of geo-informatics.

The department caters to a huge peripheral hinterland from where large number of students and research scholars come to gain knowledge and research experience from the expertise of esteemed faculty members. The students from varied geographical regions comprising of the foothill as well as hilly terrain of Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya in the north, alluvium hill shade of Brahmaputra valley of Assam in the east, undulating topographic variation formed by Gangetic depositional alluvium of Bihar and Jharkhand tract in the west and flat type topographical situation ranging from Gangetic delta to Jangalmahal of southern part of West Bengal come to this department.
