UNIVERSITY OF NORTH BENGAL
The Department of Geology was established in 2018 to promote higher studies in the field of Geological Sciences under the University of North Bengal. This Department is offering post graduate studies and doctoral/ post-doctoral research for the first time in the North Bengal sector. The Department also offers three-year (CBCS) undergraduate (B.Sc) course in the University main campus at Siliguri, Darjeeling. In spite of being in extremely young, the department has already demonstrated its presence in national forum. Faculty members are engaged in advanced research of various fundamental earth science problems. The department regularly invites stalwarts of the field as guest faculties to provide highest possible learning experience to the students. The department already established a front-line geochemical laboratory and regular geological laboratory facilities including high-resolution microscope facility (petrology and micro-paleontology), computer laboratory. The Department regularly organize geological field training program as a part of curriculum in various important parts of the Indian peninsula and extra-peninsular region. Students of the department are always encouraged to think independently in terms of their master’s dissertation and regular interactive sessions. Students of our department made the University proud by winning prizes in various national competitions. Being strategically located at the foothills of the Himalayas, the department has immense scope to grow further and flourish to become a leading earth science research and teaching institution in the region. With a combined effort from the University, expert faculty members and most importantly enthusiastic students of this department is certainly on the right track.
The learners will have the ability to identify and classify common rocks and minerals, geological problems and develop explanations of processes that produce them. They will have knowledge to understand plate tectonics and have the ability to articulate the relationship between volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountain belts and tectonic plate boundaries.
