UNIVERSITY OF NORTH BENGAL
The Department of Philosophy, North Bengal University, which was established in 1968, is one of the very accomplished centres of learning and research in Philosophy in India. We take pride in being a department where equal emphasis is placed on quality research as well as on development and training of students through extensive teacher-student interaction. The Department of Philosophy has earned high accolades with the award of Special Assistance Programme DRS-I (2002-09), DRS-II (2009-14) and DRS-III (2015 onwards) by the UGC to carry out research on ‘The Problem of Meaning in Classical Indian Philosophy and Contemporary Western Philosophy’, including the translation of Sanskrit texts into regional languages. The Centre for Ambedkar Studies and Centre for Buddhist Studies is also housed in the department. A Unit for Psychological Counselling and Learning Self-help has been opened with the initiative of the Department members.
Our department is a vibrant centre of higher education and research. Academic activities like taking up of research projects, publication of books and papers, organization of seminars/workshops and refresher courses have been a mark of the department over the years. An atmosphere of free discussion is encouraged in the department which helps the students to realize the significance of Philosophy in areas beyond the contours of the syllabus. Student–teacher interaction during classroom teaching as well as during seminars is not strictly confined to the limits of the syllabus, but transcends into other areas of importance and relevance. National and international seminars and lectures by well-known scholars are held regularly in the department. Faculty from various Indian and foreign universities visit us regularly, adding to the vitality of the academic discourse here. The faculty members of this department also visit universities abroad on visiting faculty programmes and for attending seminars/conferences. Students are encouraged to take part in academic discussions with visiting faculty and to participate in seminars/conferences.
